In modernity, you can pass through your whole life without truly creating anything.
Sure, you may create a paper for school or a project for work, but is that really yours? True creation has one architect and one arbitrator: the creator.
Becoming a true creator is like becoming an artist: it allows the individual to re-discover themselves in a world where we are shown what to be and spend all of our time imitating these images (even if only subconsciously).
I learned this lesson from Annette Lemieux in February 2019. With all of my college requirements completed, I took Silkscreening, a studio art class with no formal assignments. The grading of the course was based on our ability to produce 3 projects by the end of the year using the techniques we learned. Annettee (an artist whose work has been featured in MOMA, the MET, the Whitney, and other museums) challenged us to create. It was without a doubt my most freeing and happiest time in college. Even though I was consuming content, I did so with the purpose to create something new for myself.
Don't just let the world happen to you, happen to the world: create more than you consume.
